We have published our annual report summarizing our activities for the fiscal year 2023 (April 2023 – March 2024). Please take a look at the results of our activities made possible by your support.
With the cooperation and support of many of you, Pathways Japan has provided more than 200 people who have experienced refugee experiences over the past three years since its establishment in 2021, with the mission of paving new paths for refugees through education, and has helped them gain admission, education, and self-reliance in Japan.
In fiscal year 2023, three years after the organization’s establishment, we admitted students from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine into Japan, and provided scholarships for young people with refugee backgrounds living in Japan to pursue higher education. We have also expanded our job hunting support activities to help students in Japan realize their career goals, such as “company exchange meetings” and “job hunting fairs”.
By April of this year, the number of students admitted from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine had reached 177. Of the 71 students who have completed Japanese language school or higher education, approximately 30%, excluding those who went on to higher education, have found employment. This annual report summarizes the three-year history of the program and also introduces the voices of students who have entered higher education or found employment, along with those who newly arrived in Japan this year.
Achievements of three years of activities
For the next academic year, we have begun accepting applications for students from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, and have received applications from more than 1,300 young people, more than last year. Additionally, students who will graduate next spring are reaching a critical point in their career choices, and we are supporting them along their individual steps so that they can find and realize the careers they aspire to in Japan.
We will continue to work with government agencies, local governments, educational institutions, corporations, foundations, religious organizations, NGOs/NPOs, and supporters to expand the pathways to a future for refugee youth in Japan.
We appreciate your continued understanding and cooperation with our activities.
