Meiji University was originally established as Meiji Law School by three young lawyers in 1881 in the early years of Japan’s modern period. With “Rights and Liberty, Independence and Self-government” as its guiding principles, Meiji has continued to be one of the leading private universities in Japan made up of 10 undergraduate schools, 12 graduate schools, and 4 professional graduate schools. Meiji University is right in the middle of Tokyo, the political, economic, commercial, academic, and cultural center of Japan. But as much as Tokyo’s cutting-edge movement of goods, capital and information makes for a dynamic and exciting atmosphere, the city also preserves its traditional culture and history. Modernity amidst tradition – Tokyo has it all. Meiji University is an urban university located in the center of this Tokyo metropolis.

Meiji University has been actively promoting internationalization in order to send out into society human resources with the initiative to pioneer the future of the world and Japan. Its internationalization efforts have been adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for several grant programs, and it is one of the most international universities in Japan with over 2,200 international students studying here.
